The Royal Wedding Watching

The excitement of the Royal Wedding caught up with me eventually as I was suffering yesterday after staying up late to watch the preparations, I should know better really!
But what fun we had watching this beautiful and meticuously planned event unfold yesterday in London and go without a hitch apart from the slight wedding ring potentially not fitting (always a good tip for a wedding planner to carry a handcream with them!)

We loved everything, the trees in the Abbey were a highlight for me (albeit lacking in fairy lights!) along with the abundance of lily of the valley. The dress was exactly as I imagined it, with the Grace Kelly style and I loved the sister's dress, it was to die for but then so was her figure.

I do think the Middleton girls need to give some style lessons though to the two princesses, what a mess they were, I thought one looked like an explosion in a paint shop and the other looked like a giant pretzel! Apart from this style disaster we loved the day :)

Your Own Royal Wedding

The perfection of Kate and William's wedding will surely influence trends for years to come. But since most of us won't have thousands of guests and a national holiday declared for our wedding day, how do we interpret the perfect elegance of a royal wedding? Well first, get married at a castle. In Ireland. Last week I visited just such a magical place, fit for a princess.

Adare Manor, a 19th Century mansion, located just a half hour from Shannon Airport, is a quick 7 hours direct flight from NYC. And as you arrive, you're truly transported.
As you approach the manor, this is your view. The emerald green lawn is perfect for an outdoor wedding ceremony.
The three-hundred year old cedar tree marks a great photo spot.
The lawn, ceremony-ready. In the background is the famed Adare Manor Golf Club, voted the number one Golf Resort in Ireland and the UK by Conde Nast Traveller. Not bad.
The formal gardens at Easter, an ever-changing floral backdrop.
I was lucky enough to meet with all of Adare Manor's preferred vendors, from planners to floral designers -- and they are guaranteed to make your planning process easy and unique.
The Manor's walled gardens are a perfect setting for an outdoor wedding, ideal for a marquee.
Another view of the walled gardens, I picture a Sunday brunch with mimosas in hand, or a Friday barbecue complete with pig roast. There is so much to choose -- ranging from the Tavern for a late-night after-party to the Gallery fit for a king.
A weekend event has to include a little fly-fishing -- right outside the Manor the river is stocked with salmon and trout. A guide is on-hand with fishing poles and instructions.
The nearby Adare Village local church is lovingly restored, a mixture of vibrant painting and 700 year-old architecture. There are both Protestant and Catholic churches nearby, and the ruins of an abbey for a perfectly breathtaking backdrop a few hundred yards away off the property.
The nearby village of Adare boasts charming shops with thatch roofs, cozy pubs and additional accommodations for wedding guests at all price points. My favorite stops were at the local antique stores, packed with great finds.

All-in-all I had a fabulous experience at Adare, and have many great ideas and inspirations from the trip. Explore it yourself on their web site, or give me a call for additional first-hand tips on hosting your own royal wedding.

Get Wed Well!

Gown Friday: Royal Wedding Dress!

In one of the most anticipated fashion events of the decade, Kate's unveiling of her royal wedding gown was nothing short of spectacular.  Designed by the fashion house of the late designer Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton created a stunning gown with delicate Chantilly lace sleeves and the white and ivory skirt designed to resemble an opening of a flower.

Reminiscent of the iconic Grace Kelly gown, I am completely in love with her choice.  Perfectly understated and simply elegant--just what a young royal should represent. What a magical event!  See you ladies next week!

ENCHANTING MEMORIES

History is about to be made tomorrow with another royal wedding taking place in England. It seemed fitting to post a special image with its own enchanting story today. Meet Betty & Jack who had a lovely life in rural NSW and later Sydney. With their own businesses in the country, eight children and fourteen grandchildren, their life certainly was busier than most of us can ever imagine. Dont you just love the old glamour of 1940's black & white photography

Sadly Jack passed away suddenly of a heart attack on 26th July 1964 leaving behind Betty and their eight children (the eldest was 14 years and the youngest 11months). After a lifetime spent bringing up the children and welcoming the grandchildren into her life Betty went on to travel the world and was delighted by the simple pleasures of life. Her life is a testament to those universal time old traditions of loyalty, trust & honour.

I have often found that true love sometimes surpasses all levels of reason in life. Betty passed away in 1998 and as fate would have it...on the same day as her husband Jack just 35 years later. As the first grandchild of Betty & Jack I was duly spoilt by all of their eight children growing up. Betty was my best friend, the first person I travelled to America with in 1981 (a place I would come to frequent many times since for work) and she loved the royal family. My memories of our times together as a child & adult are vast. I was with her the first time we met Princess Diana and she was in essence my own Queen Mum. Who would have known that on the other side of the harbour my future husband would be photographing her for some Australian magazines later that day.....fate x (My love for black & white film was shared on our own glamourous shot pictured above in 2001.)

What to wear: reader question!

Good morning!  Today we are answering a Weddings Fresh reader question.  Here is what bride-to-be Charmaine had to ask:

I'm getting married in beautiful old colonial park this July, and it is Chinese tradition for the bride to have 3 outfit changes - a wedding dress, an evening dress (typically something cheerful and colorful), and a traditional Chinese qipao.

I've found my other two dresses, but I've been looking for an evening gown for the past few months and can't seem to find options that are affordable and fit the bill for a garden wedding. Most brides wear floor-sweeping evening gowns in silks and jewel-tones, but that doesn't quite fit the aesthetic of an outdoor party. I'm having trouble finding an appropriate style that's floaty, light, and fun to dance in! I've considered shorter styles, but because I'm very petite (5"1), I'm worried that they might look very nondescript (and too informal) on me. On the other hand, the only floor-length styles I've liked (in terms of print/colour/material/aesthetic) are maxi-dresses that tend more towards being too informal-looking, because they aren't very tailored or fitted.

Three dresses in one day?!  Girl, that sounds like a dream!  But I understand the dilemma.  Trying to find a formal gown that fits the less traditional atmosphere of a garden wedding, as well as looking elegant, sophisticated and chic all in a tiny 5'1" frame.  I'm going to preface all of suggestions with this:  get a tailor. Or at least have one on standby.  To ensure the best fit and look for your petite figure without sacrificing style, it will be in your best interest to use a tailor to finish off your look.  Perhaps even working with a local designer to create a dress just for you would be helpful as well.  I'm not sure if you live here in Portland, but I would recommend Sarah Seven for a custom design.

With that said, here is what I have found:
I would choose a longer dress to stay true to the formality of the evening.  It will help add elegance and sophistication.  As far as the fit of the dress, focus on defining the smallest part of your body: your waist.
Adding a fitted bodice will also keep the dress from looking like it's swallowing you up!  As for as the skirt, I am loving flowy chiffon or silk.  Dresses in these fabrics are absolutely ideal for your garden setting and so very chic this summer.  These enchanting dresses look perfectly dreamy in the twilight breeze and are airy enough to get your groove on until the late night.

The first 4 dresses are a little more on the glam side of things.  Malene Birger, Antik Batik, Rachel Gilbert & Marc Jacobs all are show-stopping choices but if your budget doesn't include a designer price tag then perhaps not the choice for you.  But that doesn't mean there aren't more dresses!  As I searched through a ton of online stores and designers, I chose mostly from the Spring 2012 Amsale bridesmaid collection.  I know, I know, it may seem unconventional to use a bridesmaid dress but what I have found is, it offers the unique balance between respecting the formal tradition of a wedding and the need to look chic and youthful.  The silk chiffon fabric is stunning and the movement of the collection is breathtaking.  Not to mention, Amsale offers a gorgeous array of colors that will fit your creamy sorbet color pallet!

I also spotted a couple other options from Shopbop.com.  But I do caution you: the more voluminous the material, the greater the chance the dress could start wearing you, rather you wearing the dress.  But with that said, it all depends on what it looks like once you put it on your body :)  So I have chosen a couple other dresses that are a more than little of a step up from the everyday maxi dress but offer the same appeal and look as this hot summer trend.

I hope this helps you and your search for the perfect dress!  We would all love to see what you choose if you want to share!  Best to you and all of your wedding planning :)

A Cinco de Mayo Party Inspiration

Any excuse for a party and Cinco de Mayo is no exception with this gloriously brightly coloured Mexican theme to have fun with.

We found these lovely styling ideas on Celebrations using a riot of colours, margaritas in both forms, the daisies and of course the drink, chillis, a photo booth and lots of tasty Mexican food ideas so when we are all finished with the traditional Royal Wedding parties with our scones and tea, we can move on to the maracas!

A big thank you to one of my lovely couples this year for bringing me some official Royal Wedding tea to celebrate in style on Friday.

Spring Wedding Shoot

There is something alluring about a rustic, outdoor wedding filled with the simplest of touches.  Old country charm, homemade desserts, fresh garden flowers and an ancient over grown tree in the midst of a far reaching field...what is it that draws us in?  I think it's all about home. Reminders that life's littlest of things, like strawberry short cake and an old wooden table, give us a sense of family and bring us together in the most comforting of ways.  This lovely inspiration shoot from The Nouveau Romantics shot by The Nichols brings to life these homespun emotions in a beautiful way.

Enjoy!

DIY Pretty Paper Flowers

April showers, bring May flowers...right?!  Pretty please??  It would seem if that rhyme is true we will have an over abundance of gorgeous, well watered flowers that will spring up May 1st :)  But in the meantime, I think these pretty paper flowers from Scrapbooksetc.com will do just the trick to brighten up this gloomy weather.  I wouldn't  suggests these cute works of art for bouquets or vases, but they are ideal for decorating place cards, table numbers, or menu cards, as well as affixing them to walls or hanging them from above as well!  Plus, you can do them all on your own, which means you can get creative as you please!  Spring, spring, please come...
